London Design Festival 2007

SIZE:
240 x 1130 x 460 cm

CONCEPT:
The vision for the Urban Nebula installation designed by Zaha Hadid Architects was to explore the potential of precast concrete as a medium for repetitive and fl uid form. By combining traditional repetitive precast moulding techniques with contemporary computer numerical control (cnc) machine moulding, a system of standard elements has been created in which each individual component has a unique variation.

Taking its name from the form of a nebula gas, the individual elements of the piece create a fl uidity that resonates with the structure of a nebula, yet presents an enigmatic contradiction by describing concrete in this way – a material typically perceived to be inert. Areas of darkness and light visible in a nebula are evident within the Urban Nebula as hexagonal and triangular voids produced by the positioning of the installation’s individual elements.

The installation is composed of 150 blocks of black polished pre-cast concrete with a total mass of 30 tonnes, bolted together to form a perforated wall that seamlessly transforms into furniture, resonating between architecture as a mate-rial system and sculptural form.

The Urban Nebula installation is a hybrid of traditional ideas of standardisation coupled with contemporary methods of manufacture that explores the plastic qualities of concrete as a material. It is reminiscent of the rough improvisational characteristics of dry stone walling, yet adopts the smooth polished surface of stone pebbles in a riverbed. The original design of one standard element with a range of end conditions was mapped using 3D imaging software. The individual elements were then made using standard steel moulds into which computer cut polystyrene end pieces were inserted, together with stainless steel anchors for fixing.
