CONCEPT:
For her inaugural exhibition in the Gulf, Zaha Hadid – Fluidity and Design, the Pritzker Prize winning architect presents her practice’s continued exploration and research towards a new architectural language of fluidity that encompasses all scales of design – a built manifesto informed by originality and innovation. Evolving from the demands of greater complexity and variety in contemporary society, this new language is driven by the latest advances in computational design processes and state of-the-art fabrication technologies.

Zaha Hadid views the fields of urbanism, architecture and design as inherently interrelated, with the fluid sensibility of her design projects impacting our own perception of space. In a dialogue of complex curvilinear geometries – each design morphologically conceived and shaped further by typological, functional and ergonomic considerations – Hadid reinvents the balance between object and space – establishing a direct discourse with the Cartesian galleries of the Shaikh Ebrahim Center and presenting the unbounded possibilities of her formal repertoire.

Showcased in the Bin Matar House, one of the traditional Bahraini houses restored by the Shaikh Ebrahim Center, Zaha Hadid – Fluidity and Design reveals the spatial complexity of Hadid’s visionary creations. The exhibition brings together a selection of works that articulate our immediate tactile environment, demonstrating Hadid’s radical reinterpretation of the space we occupy. As with each of their projects, Zaha Hadid Architects has designed this exhibition in direct response to its environment within the Bahraini architectural vernacular, articulating the inherent contextual relationships of the exhibition with a formal integration of diverse forms. While respecting the orthogonal qualities and traditional organization of the spaces at Bin Matar House, the exhibition design intervenes with the spatial and contextual characteristics of the gallery by applying the organic design paradigm of Hadid’s fluid complexity.

A component system of differentiated blocks emerges from the Cartesian grid of the gallery spaces. The outline and system of these blocks are aligned with and based upon the orthogonal genius loci of Bin Matar House. Each fragment progressively deviates from the system, introducing complexity and transforming the installation into a leaning array. Intercepted at increasing angels and varying intervals to enhance accessibility, the installation adapts the repetition and variation of Bin Matar House yet re-organizes each space as a considered moment within the overall exhibition

By the introducing component system of showcases to the gallery, the exhibition design generates a convergence of its Cartesian space and Hadid’s fluid geometries.
