CONCEPT:
“In the Russian avant-garde exhibition at the Guggenheim, all the paintings were suspended so you saw them all in one go. We had only two months to do the whole show, so we spent day and night at the Guggenheim. I got to know it much better as I nearly lived there. I’m amazed that we managed to do it, but we wet the floors and slid PVC to make these very large shapes. It was an unbelievable event, putting water and soap on the floor in the Guggenheim and gliding the plastic on – then you had to push the water out to make it stick perfectly with no bubbles. All these tricks.

There was almost a religious moment when they opened up Malevich’s Black Square (1913). Every curator in the Russian world was there to witness it, despite the fact that we had thought they didn’t like Malevich. We had to open the box at two in the morning and hang the black square. It was an interesting moment in terms of the history of the Guggenheim. It was just after Russia and the Soviet republics had opened up, but it was also a shop window of works that had been borrowed from institutions under one umbrella. If you did the show again you’d have to borrow works from I don’t know how many countries. We wanted to use the spiral to make a story, and the idea of moving seamlessly began to emerge, as if walking on a slope. We wanted to see how you could interrupt it with obstacles. We used the screens in the museum to show posters, which pushed you to the edge of the ramp. That’s why I like the Guggenheim – because of the ability to see different perspectives all at the same time.”
