CLIENT:

MAIN SPONSOR:
Shanghai World Expo 2010

CONCEPT:
Egypt, like China, is one of the earliest centres of human civilization, and also like China, a birthplace for its future development. The design of the Egyptian pavilion reflects upon this illustrious history whilst at the same time embodying the nation’s present and its future possibilities.

The design concept ‘Mother of the World’ derives from the column of Hathor, the Mother of the Gods, which is the centrepiece of the Egyptian exhibition at Shanghai World Expo 2010. With the column at its heart, the pavilion itself becomes a labyrinthine ‘womb’ showcasing a unique collection of ancient jewels – the progeny Egyptian civilization has bestowed to the world as its legacy. The pavilion’s interior follows the coherent formal logic of a singular enveloping ribbon, yet offers the spatial complexity to best exhibit each exceptional piece within the collection. The ribbon’s smooth surface interweaves and coils within the interior, embracing the exhibits and visitors into one continuous space. Eight authentic artefacts from the age of the Pharaohs – each embodying the magnificent skill and craftsmanship of their creators – offer points of reference and moments of contemplation within the pavilion. These original pieces are displayed on podiums which blend and liquefy, connecting them to the overall design.

The installation is designed as a series of spaces wrapped by a ribbon of fabric which spirals and twists upon itself to create multiple perspectives. The pavilion’s façade is highlighted at the main entrance by elements of the ribbon which welcome visitors into the space and guide them throughout the exhibition. The ribbon connects the different zones of the pavilion – giving each space a distinct identity, yet bringing a unifying formal character to the overall exhibition. It combines ceiling, floor and walls in a spatial continuum to showcase the artefacts and becomes a projection surface for an astonishing moving-image installation – a film commissioned and designed especially for the fluid surfaces of the ribbon within the Egyptian Pavilion.
